Enhancing Our Processes and Protocols
UC San Diego is committed to protecting the physical safety of all individuals in our community. The campus is also committed to upholding people’s right to free expression on campus and at the same time ensuring that campus events are not unreasonably disrupted. As part of this commitment, we have developed – and will continue to evaluate – processes and protocols related to event preparation and event security. Following are some of the steps we have taken:
Operational Enhancements
- Instituted new positions and/or programs including:
- Community Specialists - Trained to interact with individuals during protests and demonstrations and charged with both protecting the right to free expression and the right to conduct approved events without unreasonable disruptions.
- Special Events and Community Programs Lieutenant - Operational lead for the UC San Diego Police Department for major events and expressive activities and charged with ensuring safety and respect for the laws of the State of California.
- Triton Safety Officials (TSO) – UC San Diego Police Department’s dedicated, tiered-response safety team
- Established the Campus Activities Review Team (CART) to review and plan for significant events on a weekly basis.
Training & Preparedness
- Improved the resources for campus readiness and preparedness for supporting special events, including expressive activities, including newly created QR‑coded materials that can be handed out and/or displayed around campus.
- Developed a multi-topic safety and event-management training for staff, designed to support shared understanding and effective response across campus partners.
Infrastructure & Technology
- Launched the enhanced Triton Reservation and Event System (T-RES), emphasizing improved transparency and coordination for planned events.
- Equipped and trained staff on the use of decibel meters to monitor compliance with campus noise regulations.
